  • Does Your Child Move Correctly? Podcast with Dr. Randy Naidoo @ SHINE Pediatrics Clinic

Coach Jacob joined a podcast with SHINE Pediatrics to help families learn better ways to educate their children on preventing injuries and promoting long-term health.

    Dr. Randy Naidoo:
“Could you walk families through what they should do if they have an older child — whether that child is an athlete or participates in numerous extracurricular activities, from band to other movement-based programs? What steps should families take at this stage, whether their child is a teenager or even a young adult?”

    Coach Jacob:
“It’s important to understand how growth plates factor into this stage of development. For females, growth plates typically close earlier than they do for males.”

    Dr. Randy Naidoo:
    “That’s correct.”

    Coach Jacob:
“On average, growth plates close between ages 13 and 15 for females and between 15 and 17 for males. Once those growth plates close, it becomes exponentially more difficult to improve soft tissue mobility. Achieving the flexibility and range of motion you want — whether as an athlete or simply for overall health — becomes significantly harder. That’s why it’s crucial for teenagers to focus on mastering natural movement now. There’s an urgency to it because, once those growth plates close, gaining the necessary soft tissue mobility is far more challenging.”
